How the counseling process works

Intake Session

When you get in touch, we will schedule an intake session, a time for us to meet and connect. Together, we’ll clarify your reason for seeking counseling, what’s often called your ‘presenting issue’, so we can determine whether I’m the right person to support you. I reserve about 90 minutes for this initial meeting, so we can take our time.

If we decide to continue, we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment and agree on the frequency of our sessions. Most often, meetings take place every two weeks, preferably at a fixed time. During the intake, you’ll receive an information form to complete at home and bring to your next appointment. For online sessions, everything will be handled by email.

Sessions

After about five sessions, we will evaluate the progress made and whether to continue. By that time, your original ‘presenting issue’ may have evolved, or new aspects may have come to light. Each session typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, but this can always be discussed and adjusted to suit your needs.

Homework Assignments

The insights we gain during our sessions only lead to healing when, with God’s help, they result in concrete changes in your thinking and behavior. This process of renewal is deeply connected to your daily life and your relationship with God.

To support you in this, you will receive a personalized assignment at the end of each session. We decide on it together to ensure it fits your situation and is manageable for you at that time. This way, you can intentionally engage in this process between sessions.

Closure

Once you have gained enough insight to better navigate your situation, and your original ‘presenting issue’ has been sufficiently addressed, we’ll bring the counseling process to a close with a final evaluation session. If you ever have further questions or feel the need to reconnect, you’re always welcome to contact me.

Counseling Agreement

If you decide to begin a counseling process with me, we’ll set out our mutual commitments in a counseling agreement. This document clearly outlines what you can expect, as well as what you can do to help make the process fruitful. You can view this document here.
